The oldest stone building in Leiden is the former Bibliotheque Wallonne. The roof construction of this building at 40 Pieterskerkhof dates from the year 1380. In the Middle Ages, many French-speaking Walloons lived in Leiden. They founded, among others, the Walloon Church on Breestraat (where French-speaking services are still held) and the Walloon Library. Around 1700, the Walloon community in Leiden had around 5,000 members. The building was also formerly used as a hospital and an orphanage, but is best known as the “Bibliotheque Wallonne”.

The current complex of 6 apartments was built around 1978 after a complete renovation. This apartment at Pieterskerkhof 40 is one of the larger apartments and is spread over 3 floors.
